The AI divide reshaping financial institutions

Key Takeaways

  • AI adoption is accelerating: Two-thirds of lenders have launched or plan to launch GenAI strategies by 2026.
  • Real value comes from practical applications: Purpose-built AI is helping financial institutions save time, uncover insights faster, and improve decision-making.
  • Adoption alone isn’t enough: The institutions seeing the greatest impact are applying AI to the right workflows with the right strategy and partners.
  • The real AI divide is about results: The gap is forming between institutions turning AI into measurable value and those still struggling to move beyond experimentation and hype.
  • ‍

There are two types of financial institutions today: those using AI effectively, and those at risk of falling behind the leaders who are.

The numbers show that  financial institutions successfully leveraging AI are seeing significantly lower delinquencies and faster loan growth than the ones that aren't. They're adapting quickly when conditions shift. The institutions that aren’t leveraging AI are seeing the opposite: rising, harder-to-control losses, growth that requires linear headcount increases just to keep up, and a slow, painful scramble every time the environment changes.

This is no longer a niche trend. A Celent survey of 106 U.S. banks, credit unions, and consumer finance companies, found that two-thirds of lenders have either already launched or plan to launch generative AI strategies by 2026. That pace outstrips every prior lending technology wave, including AI/ML, online lending, mobile lending, and automated underwriting. Budgets are rising: 83% of lenders plan to increase their GenAI IT budgets for consumer lending, and 41% expect increases of more than 5%. Celent’s Principal Analyst, Craig Focardi, put it simply: lenders are moving from pilots to production faster than in any AI wave his firm has tracked.

Real-world impact of effective AI adoption

We are saving upwards of 150 hours annually by switching to LuLu for our data and insights. That’s time we can then apply to more strategic analysis and helping our members.”

By using LuLu, Credit Union West was able to cut the time spent on analytical reporting by 94%, saving about a month a year in report creation.

Results like these point to a broader lesson about effective AI adoption. Financial institutions don’t need to build AI infrastructure or develop foundation models themselves to see meaningful impact. The opportunity lies at the application layer: choosing AI built for the specific workflows, challenges, and decisions that define lending. With the right partner, AI becomes more than a technology investment—it becomes a practical way to improve efficiency, uncover insights, and make better decisions across the organization.

That practical value matters regardless of what happens in the broader AI market. There may be hype baked into today’s AI valuations, and the market could eventually see a correction. But a correction in valuation doesn’t erase real-world impact. The dot-com crash didn’t stop the internet from transforming how businesses operate, and an AI market correction wouldn’t undo the efficiencies and insights financial institutions are already gaining from purpose-built lending applications.

At the same time, separating AI’s lasting value from the hype requires financial institutions to be clear about what the technology can—and can’t—do. A few persistent misconceptions can make that harder.

Three misconceptions holding back the AI adoption

First myth: ChatGPT can answer all your institution's questions.

Reality: Generic AI has no context on your data, and in a regulated industry, that's a liability, not a shortcut. You need AI that's actually trained on your institution's information.

Second myth: GenAI is instantly delivering huge ROI everywhere.

Reality: Adoption is accelerating, but value isn't automatic. Most organizations are still working through pilot-to-scale friction, where real value requires the right workflow, strategy, and partners who know the space.

Third myth: AI can replace your entire workforce.

Reality: AI is an equalizer, not a replacement. Teams using tools like LuLu are answering queries faster and working with current data instead of falling behind larger competitors with bigger headcounts.

The real divide in AI won’t be between institutions that use AI and those that don’t. It will be between those that turn AI into measurable value and those that struggle to move beyond the hype.

The technology is here. The use cases are becoming clearer. And financial institutions are already demonstrating what’s possible when AI is applied to the right problems with the right strategy and partners.
